About Us

History of the college:

St. Ann’s college was started as a Junior College in 1976 August 2nd under the management of St. Ann’s Charitable Society in the land donated by the Caltex oil refinery.  It was started with 28 students and 9 staff members on its roll, to provide education to the girls of Industrial area and also to the girls coming from the remote villages of A.P., M.P., Bihar and other states.

This campus was full of palmgra trees and the Coromandal Fertilizers was generous enough to lend their bulldozers to clear them off.

Since the construction of this building was not completed, the classes were conducted in St. Joseph’s School which is run by the same management.  Sr. Rosy Paul was the first principal and nine staff members were selected.

When the construction of the building was completed in July 1977, classes were shifted to this clean and green campus and in December it had the official inauguration.  It was blessed by Late Bishop Ignatius Gopu and District Collector Sri K. Obayya, I.A.S. As Sr.Rosy Paul retired, Sr. Immaculate took charge.  Initially we started with Bi.P.C. and H.E.C group.  In 1978 hostel was started for the girls who came from faraway places.  M.P.C. was added to the existing group in 1980.  Our College was admitted into grant-in-aid in the same year.

In 1987 Sr.Immaculate was transferred to Vijayawada as she was elected as the Assistant Provincial and SR. TRESA MARY took over.  In 1988 Vocational Course (MPHW) was added to the existing three groups.  This course has helped many of our students to take up jobs immediately after the completion of their intermediate.  Those who got good percentage have gone for B.Sc. Nursing and General Nursing.  Today it has got lot of demand.

With phenomenal expansion of Visakhapatnam city, the population is growing at very high rate and the existing colleges are not able to provide facilities to all the students who want to pursue degree courses.  Sr. Tresa Mary retired in the year 2007 after rendering 35 years of service.  Later the college was run under the leadership of Sr. Belsy for Degree and Sr. Prema for Intermediate, Sr. Christy took as incharge for Degree for an year in the place of Sr. Belsy from 2014-15.  At present the college both Degree and Intermediate moves emphatically under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Sr. Prema.

The college is located in an area of 7 acres.  With total area of 29,307 Sqft.

In order to help our degree students to have better job opportunities certificate computer course PGDCA was introduced in the year 1993-94.  The first batch of degree students brought laurels to our institution by securing 100 percentage in the public exam.  Two of them received Gold Medals for securing highest marks in English & Hindi.

Seeing the demand for commerce subjects CEC group was started in intermediate in the academic year 1997-98.  Since applied sciences are favoured than the conventional subjects in 2000-01 Biotechnology and Microbiology were added to the existing B.Sc. Course.

After upgrading the College, the first floor was constructed with all the necessary labs for the degree.  When it was built, it was by a grimness of red stones.  To compete with the present changing educational scenario, we have also introduced EAMCET coaching in 2008 and computer DCA for Intermediate students in 2009.  To create employability, we added few more vocational course like MLT, CSE, PSTT to Intermediate college.  With lots of transitional changes in groups, strength, facilities at present the college upholds its face with its natural beauty, serene atmosphere, sound structure and welcome to its blossom of knowledge all the young aspirants.  Initially the college has 771 Intermediate and 480 Degree.  Well-equipped 41 teaching staff and 19 supporting staff.
