Profile

St. Ann’s College for Women (Degree) is Christian minority institution established in the year 1991 under the management of St. Ann’s charitable society with a vision of empowering girls and women coming from rural and industrial area through education.

The Institution aims not only to impart academic education but also to give holistic education and thus to bring out disciplined young women of sound moral character who will be an asset and credit to their family and to the country. It intends to foster an atmosphere of intellectual pursuit in which young women, irrespective of indifferences to work and mix together and attain excellence in their chosen field of study and in moral integrity. It aims to equip the students with new knowledge, new skills, new understanding and new learning habits with positive attitude. Our main thrust is to provide holistic education to empower the young girls to be the role models in the present world.

Brief History:
St. Ann’s college was started as a Junior College in 1976 August 2nd in the land donated by the Caltex oil refinery. It was started with 28 students and 9 staff members on its roll, to provide education to the girls of Industrial area and also to the girls coming from the remote villages of A.P., M.P., Bihar and other states.
Since the construction of this building was not completed, the classes were conducted in St. Joseph’s School which is run by the same management. Sr. Rosy Paul was the first principal and nine staff members were selected. When the construction of the building was completed in July 1977, classes were shifted to this clean and green campus and in December it had the official inauguration. It was blessed by Late Bishop Ignatius Gopu and District Collector Sri K. Obayya, I.A.S. As Sr.Rosy Paul retired, Sr. Immaculate took charge. Initially we started with Bi.P.C. and H.E.C group. In 1978 hostel was started for the girls who came from faraway places. M.P.C. was added to the existing group in 1980. Our College was admitted into grant-in-aid in the same year. In 1987 Sr.Immaculate was transferred to Vijayawada as she was elected as the Assistant Provincial and SR. TRESA MARY took over. In 1988 Vocational Course (MPHW) was added to the existing three groups. This course has helped many of our students to take up jobs immediately after the completion of their intermediate. Those who got good percentage have gone for B.Sc. Nursing and General Nursing. Today it has got lot of demand. Seeing the demand for commerce subjects CEC group was started in intermediate in the academic year 1997-98. To compete with the present changing educational scenario, we have also introduced EAMCET coaching in 2008 and computer DCA for Intermediate students in 2009. To create employability, we added few more vocational course like MLT, CSE, to Intermediate college.

With phenomenal expansion of Visakhapatnam city, the population is growing at very high rate and the existing colleges are not able to provide facilities to all the students who want to pursue degree courses thus degree block was instituted in the year 1991 with the intention of imparting quality higher education. Initially we started with BSc (Chemistry, Botany, Bio Chemistry), B.Com (General), and B.A (History, Economics, Public Administration). In order to help our degree students to have better job opportunities certificate computer course PGDCA was introduced in the year 1993-94. The first batch of degree students brought laurels to our institution by securing 100 percentage in the public exam. Two of them received Gold Medals for securing highest marks in English & Hindi. Since applied sciences are favored than the conventional subjects in 2000-01 Biotechnology and Microbiology were added to the existing B.Sc. Course. Later in the year 2011 Bio Chemistry was withdrawn and BSc MPC (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), MSCs (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science) were introduced. Catering to the options required by the upcoming batches course such as B.Com Computers (2015) and BSc CBZ (Chemistry, Botany, Zoology) (2018) were imparted.

Leadership:
Sr. Tresa Mary retired in the year 2007 after rendering 35 years of service. Later the college was run under the leadership of Sr. Belsy for Degree and Sr. Prema for Intermediate, Sr. Christy took as incharge for Degree for an year in the place of Sr. Belsy from 2014-15. At present the college both Degree and Intermediate moves emphatically under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Sr. Prema.

After upgrading the College, the first floor was constructed with all the necessary labs for the degree. When it was built, it was by a grimness of red stones. With lots of transitional changes in groups, strength, facilities at present the college upholds its face with its natural beauty, serene atmosphere, sound structure and welcome to its blossom of knowledge all the young aspirants.

The college is affiliated to Andhra University, Vishakapatnam. The college is located in an area of 7 acres, with total area of 29,307 sqft. It is a self –financed Institution.
